FAQ for Students

How do I know if I am eligible to work?

All students working on campus must meet the below eligibility requirements in order to be hired for on-campus jobs through the Student Employment Program:

• Citizenship – Must be a U.S. citizen or a non-citizen who is eligible to work in the United States, such as an international student having an F-1 Visa (see section on international students).
• Social Security Number – Valid Social Security number is required for tax purposes.
• Degree-Seeking Status – Must be a degree-seeking student and must be able to demonstrate that progress is being made toward the completion of a degree.
• Enrollment by Job Type –Federal Work Study (FWS) recipients must be enrolled in at least six (6) undergraduate credit hours.  Students in regular positions (REG), which are positions paid through departmental funds, must be enrolled in at least six (6) undergraduate or graduate credit hours unless they are in the final semester of their studies and need only three (3) credits to complete their degree, in which case they may be enrolled in three (3) credits.
• Satisfactory Academic Progress – Students must be making Satisfactory Academic Progress which is measured by the Financial Aid Office and the Registrar’s Office.  Satisfactory Academic Progress is defined as meeting the following qualifications.  
  • Students must be making satisfactory and measurable progress towards an eligible degree.
  • Students must maintain a minimum º£½ÇÉçÇø University grade point average (GPA) of 2.0 and a 2.0 cumulative GPA. Master’s degree students must maintain a minimum º£½ÇÉçÇø University GPA of 3.0 and a 3.0 cumulative GPA.
  • Undergraduate students must pass at least 70% of the credit hours attempted. Graduate students must pass at least 75% of the credit hours attempted. This includes stretch-model, foundations, and pass/fail classes.
  • All students seeking a Bachelors’ degree must complete the degree program within 150% of the normal timeframe for degree completion. All students seeking a Master’s degree must complete the program within 54 attempted credit hours.

How do I find what jobs are available?

• That’s easy! Click to see a current listing of all on-campus student jobs available.  Stuent Supervisors are responsible for reaching out to applicants to conduct interviews.

How soon/when can I start working?

• Students must complete New Hire documents and be approved by the state before starting any position. Once selected for hire, the Student Employment Coordinator will email to schedule an appointment to complete New Hire documents. You will be required to bring unexpired identification and banking information with you to the appointment. What do I need to set up my direct deposit?

• You must provide documentation with your banking account information. You may use a voided check, your bank’s direct deposit enrollment from (likely available on your banking app or website) or a letter from your bank that includes your name, bank name, routing number, and account number.

       1. What if I want to change banks?

• Before closing out your existing account, complete a with new suplimental documentation (i.e. voided check, your bank’s direct deposit form or a letter from your bank) and return it to the Student Employment Office or Payroll Office. After your next paycheck is successfully deposited in the new account, you may close the former account.

       2. When will I be able to start working and when will I be paid?

• Students may begin working after they are approved by the state; typically 5-7 business days after the receipt of all needed hiring documentation. The hiring supervisor will notify them of their start date. º£½ÇÉçÇø University pays in arrears, you will work up to 4 weeks before recieving your first check.

What is Federal Work Study and how do I get it?

• Federal Work Study (FWS) is a federally funded work program that is awarded based on qualifying factors from the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). If eligible, your financial aid pacakge will allow you to accept/decline your FWS award amount. If you do not see FWS awarded, you will only be eligible for Regular student employment.

What do I put on the application as work experience if I have never worked before?

• Even if you have never held a formal job, you still have life experience that’s applicable to the job search. Take a look at your volunteer work, civic groups, and youth organizations that you have been involved in whether at school, church, or community.  You can also include school achievements, special skills, and assets.

Who do I include as a reference on my job application?

• The best references are individuals who can judge your abilities and articulate them to prospective employers. This may include recent supervisors, former co-workers, professors/coaches, or professional friends.  It is not recommended to list a family member as a reference.

Can I have more than one job on campus?

• Students are permitted to have more than one job however; they may not work over 25 hours per week between all their jobs. By federal law, international student employees may only work a maximum of 20 hours per week.  It is the student’s responsibility to communicate to their supervisors how many jobs and hours they are working on campus.
