Chair, Larry Daily called the meeting to order at 4:10 p.m. Meeting Schedule (2010-2011): The General Studies Committee will meet every third Wednesday of the month at 4:10pm. Approval of the minutes from 09/15/2010 Dr. Clayton moves to approve the minutes from Sept. 15, 2010 motion second. Motion passes. Minutes approved from Sept. 15, 2010 meeting Someone to take minutes at the Nov. 3 meeting Kristin Kaineg will be absent from the 11/3/10 meeting. Dr. Schultz volunteered to record minutes for the Nov. 3 meeting. Chairs Report Document from Max Guirguis See Document. In brief the document states, Students should take 12 credits of English unless a student passes the first two English classes with an A/B average. If they are borderline then they can take a challenge exam and if the earn a C average they must take English III and IV. Dr. Guirguis proposal is Second. Discussion. In conclusion, the committee members believed a B average may be a bit high and would encourage grade inflation. Perhaps a C average is more realistic. An Amendment to Max Guirguis proposal: Ms. Kaineg proposes to eliminate the need for English III and IV, instead Students must earn a C or higher in the First Tier Written English. If a C is not achieved students will have to re-take the course. Motion Passes Why can history not count in both? The Proposal of 9 credits in Social Sciences and 3 credits in Humanities. There is a disconnect from what the framework presents. Dr. Schultz states we should go back to what we have and make amendments to the current General Studies program Dr. Darboe is skeptical of the proposed framework and believes what we are trying to pass is too cumbersome. Dr. Slocum-Schaffer: Students are still exposed to Literature without taking ENGL 204, 208, or 209. Many courses ask their students to read and respond to Literature that is relevant to their major. Comment in respond to Dr. Slocum-Schaffer: we should respect discipline specific perspectivesnot only exposing students only one idea. Dr. Jones agrees there is a lot of cross over between Cultural and Societal. The focus should be on competencies not courses, while too many choices can be harmful, we should still provide a narrow set of choices in each area of study. Dr. Henriksson motions to change the name of the Areas of Study and the number of credits to the following: Cultural Studies to Humanities and limit it to 3 credits Societal Studies to Social Sciences and make the number of credits 9. Artistic Studies to Art and keep 3 credits. Wellness 3 credits (no change) Writing in the Major 3 credits (no change) And to delete #4 on page 5 in the proposed framework. Motion Second Discussion: a long discussion took place regarding the Dr. Henrikssons proposal. Dr. Nixon proposed a friendly amendment to the motion. to delete #4 and make consistent throughout document. When comparing the proposal to LEAP, the proposal is inline with LEAP goals. Knowledge of Human Cultures and the Physical and Natural World Through study in the sciences and mathematics, social sciences, humanities, histories, languages, and the arts Motion Passes. Science sequences Dr. Plautz: Motions that the 8 credits in Sciences be the same science sequence. Motion Second. Discussion: Dr. Jones supports the science experts, but states that it would be good to have flexibility to explore more than one science giving diversity to the students Dr. Plautz makes the analogy of taking two semester of a foreign language, one in French and one in German. You have basic knowledge, but you are not functional in either language. If students only had one science course then the concepts would have to be condensed into one semester. Where as if they have the sequence those concepts can be stretched into a full year. Motion Passes. Students must take a Science sequence (e.g. BIO 101 & 102 plus lab or CHEM 101 & 102 plus lab, etc). First Year Experience No discussion on the FYEX course. Postponed till next meeting. GS Curriculum Change Form (Kristin Kaineg) Ms. Kaineg presented the form developed by the Application Subcommittee. Immediate comments from Committee Members: Add, Is the course required for other programs on campus? If so, list the programs. Delete, will there be a common syllabus? Postpone discussion on form until next meeting. The Form should reflect the changes passed by the committee. Changes include: Adding FYEX to the First Tier Change the name of the Areas of study to: Cultural Studies to Humanities, Societal Studies to Social Sciences, Artistic Studies to Arts More discussion on the form will take place once departments have time to review, discuss and comment on the Form. Foreign Language Proposal (Tim Nixon) Postponed till next meeting. Dr. Nixon will present proposal at the Oct. 20, 2010 meeting Feedback from Department Representatives Postponed till next meeting C & I Report (Dr. Shurbutt) No Report, Dr. Shurbutt absent from meeting Other Business Read email from Dr. Helldobler to put the General Studies rumors to rest.
