Chair, Larry Daily called the meeting to order at 4:10 p.m. Meeting Schedule (2010-2011): The General Studies Committee will meet every third Wednesday of the month at 4:10pm Approval of minutes for meeting from 8/18/2010 Minutes approved with the following Corrections: -- Add Dr. Slocum Schaffer to the motion to delete (e.g. art, music, theater, dance) and (e.g. political science, economics, psychology and sociology) on page 7-8. -- Change (SGA) in the roster for Dr. Darboe to (SOCI) C&I Report Dr. Shurbett will email the GS committee with the endorsements passed by the C&I committee. Email to include: endorsement of 120 credit hour limit and issue of course sharing. This will be sent to the committee on Sept. 2, 2010. Subcommittees Application Process and Assessment Dr. Dobish motions to create an application process subcommittee. This subcommittee will layout a process for application and made up of one member from each school and Chair of Curriculum & Instruction. The goal of this subcommittee will be to have a process resolved for the Nov. 29 meeting when the faculty meet to vote on the new Core Curriculum. Dr. Renninger will serve as a consultant to the subcommittee since she is familiar with other institutions who have a successful application process. Motion Second. Motion Passes. Members of the subcommittee: Kristin Kaineg (A+H), Carol Plautz (NS+M), Dawn Burke (E+PS), Heidi Dobish (B+SS), Sylvia Shurbett (C+I, non-voting), Laura Renninger (consultant) GS Committee agreed as a whole to wait and form subcommittee for Core Curriculum Assessment. Framework document discussion On Page 9 of the current framework, Dr. Henriksson motions to amend the third bulleted item under The Second Tier to: Every course in the catalog: civic knowledge and engagement, multiculturalism and diversity, and global understanding and respect. And Goal No. 3: Personal and Social Responsibility, in ISO 3.1 delete global as well as local Add a fourth item under ISO 3: ISO 3.2 will read Develop global understanding and respect for cultures and societies outside the United States. Motion Second. Motion Carries to make these amendments to the current Framework. Ann Henriksson will gather materials for a definition for global understand respect and will send this over email. Discussions over framework: On page 9, it was discussed to change will be expected to must take or required Tracy Seffers mentioned that Degree Evaluations can be used to map competencies. The degree evaluation will read and show when a student meets that requirement. A concern for the committee: how do we make it clear that one course cannot fulfill more than one competency? It was mentioned that the term required is too restrictive and should not replace will be expected. Concerns about Advisement: Proposed Framework is difficult for faculty to understand, how can we properly advise our students, if we do not understand the Framework? If this is extended to the possible course offerings, it would be a taxonomic nightmare. Dr. Slocum Schaffer would like to make an amendment to map competencies to each area of study, such as: Change will be expected to require Artistic Studies will have to meet Multiculturalism and Diversity Cultural Studies will have to meet Global understanding and respect Societal Studies will have to meet Civic Knowledge and engagement This would map one competency for each area to meet. By mapping these competencies to area of study, the fourth bullet on page 9 will not be needed. In addition, the first paragraphs should reflect the above revisions. Motion second. Discussion: Also we should address Scientific Literacy and Quantitative Literacy Why not call it Mathematics and Sciences like it does on page 2 in ISO 1.1? Quantitative Literacy and Scientific Literacy sound like competencies not an area of study. Through discuss it was proposed to change Dr. Slocum Schaffers amendment to: Artistic = creative thinking, Cultural = global understanding and respect and multiculturalism and diversity, and societal = civic knowledge and engagement and keep the fourth bullet deleted. Current language is too dense and how we are defining the competencies and areas of study. Perhaps the best approach is to go back to the original proposal. Motion to postpone the Amendment Dr. Slocum Schaffer proposed till next meeting on Sept. 8, 2010. Motion Carries. Special Meeting, September 8 at 4:10pm in White Hall room 209 A special GSC meeting has been called in order to have some decision on proposed Framework before the 9/13/10 C+I endorsement. Amendments to the framework prior to the 9/8 meeting should be sent over email Dr. Clayton to check on room in EOB so faculty can attend New Faculty reception and get to the GSC meeting on time. Dr. Schultz motion that Dr. Daily (Chair of GSC) meet with the VPAA to notify him the committee is behind schedule. Motion second. Discussion: This conversation needs to happen face-to-face and not over email. We should vote and decide on the Framework as a group. Motion Carries. Other Business CME Department presented a statement concerning the Education of Mathematics and Exact Sciences. The document states concern that quantitative courses in the new Core Curriculum may be potentially taught by non-specialists and this may cause unintentional harm. Dr. Henriksson motions to amend the current framework by changing Quantitative Literacy to Mathematics and Scientific Literacy to Sciences Motion Second. Motion passes with no objections. Motion to postpone vote on Framework till next meeting on Sept. 8, 2010.
